A 20-year-old was fatally shot while walking in an open field in Sanctor, Bethelsdorp, on Thursday night.
Shedwell Jacobs, 20, was found dead in the field bordering Siebritz Road after being shot multiple times by an unknown attacker.
Police spokesman Captain Johan Rheeder said Jacobs had been walking in the field when he was attacked.
“There was someone walking a distance in front of him. According to this person, he heard gun shots and ran back to see what was happening when Jacobs was found.”
Rheeder said two people were seen running away after the shooting.
“It is unclear what exactly transpired. At least three bullet casings were found on the scene,” he said.
“What happened and how it happened it currently unknown.”
Rheeder confirmed nothing was stolen during the incident.
Asked if the murder was gang related, Rheeder said it was unknown at this stage and subject to investigation.
If the murder is suspected to be linked to gangsterism, the case will be transferred to the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation unit.
