Another fatal gang shooting
A second Port Elizabeth man was shot dead in another gang-related shooting in the northern areas on Tuesday, in the same street – and at about the same time – as a fatal shooting the day before.
Marlon Koopman, 43, was gunned down in Rensburg Street, Bethelsdorp, on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the police came across Koopman’s body at about 9.15am while patrolling the area.
“He is not a gangster and the motive is unknown at this stage,” she said.
At about the same time on Monday morning, Sheldon van Schalkwyk, 29, was gunned down by two unidentified men. Police suspect that Van Schalkwyk was affiliated to the Garra Boys gang.
Both shootings are under investigation by the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit.
In another gang-related case, police released a man, 34, who was arrested on Sunday night in connection with a triple murder on November 2.
Ruaan Willemse, 8, Deacon van Rooyen, 14, and Chadwin Calvert, 17, were visiting at a house in Capulet Street, Booysen Park, when they were killed and four others wounded.
A day after the arrest police released the suspect, believed to be affiliated to the Satan gang.
Naidu said he was released due to lack of evidence.
