Police arrest 108 in PE crime blitz

300 SAPS officials on the streets for special operations on Tuesday

More than 300 police officials blitzed the streets of Nelson Mandela Bay on Tuesday as part of a joint clampdown on crime.
The operation, which started at 8am and ended on 3pm, centered mostly on the Motherwell and Mount Road cluster areas and saw specialised units, other state departments as well as detectives deployed to the streets.
In total, 108 people were arrested for crimes such as murder, attempted murder, house robbery, business robbery and unlawful possession of firearms. The police also executed arrest warrants.
“Visible policing operations resulted in the arrest of eight suspects for illegal possession of a firearm, attempted murder, pointing of a firearm, possession of drugs and undocumented persons,” police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said. “A total of 237 fines valued at R112 800 were issued for various road related offences.”
Naidu said police confiscated dagga, tik, knives, a firearm, gas pistol, ammunition and prescription medication.
Provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga said the effectiveness of these operations showed that the police were re-asserting the authority of the State and addressing lawlessness.
"These successes achieved are over and above arrests achieved during day-to-day proactive and reactive policing,” Ntshinga said.
