Mom of Rink St stabbing victim overcome as killer convicted

A DISTRAUGHT mother with a tear-streaked face burst into more heartwrenching sobbing yesterday when a man was convicted of stabbing her son, Clyde Byrns, to death in Central almost two years ago.

Thereasa van Wyk, 47, could not contain her emotions when Sithembile Jonas, 28, was convicted of murdering her son and attempting to rob his girlfriend in Rink Street on July 7 2013.

“It is all just so unnecessary. I am relieved that the man responsible has been brought to justice, but I am still without my son.

“What kind of person stabs someone and just watches them die like that? What kind of animal does that?” Van Wyk said outside the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court, while her sister, Billie-Jean van Wyk, comforted her.
