Fire near PE airport

A fire has broken out in the dense bush between Summerstrand and Walmer near the Port Elizabeth airport.
Acting NMB fire chief Wayne Hendricks said that officials were on the scene and that they were struggling to get into the bush due to the terrain.
“We have alerted the airport fire fighters who will be assisting with blocking the fire as it is heading in the direction of the airport,” he said.
“There are no houses or lives in danger at this stage.”
Hendricks added that wind was fanning the blaze causing lots of smoke over the Walmer and surrounding areas.
Residents are urged to drive with caution as the smoke may cause poor visibility.
