A case of attempted murder has been opened after a lift at the Mount Road police station fell from the fourth floor – with seven people inside.

Provincial police spokeswoman Brigadier Marinda Mills said the Public Works Department had opened a case after an independent Johannesburg conducted an investigation into the incident.

“Indications are at this stage that some of the counter weights were removed,” Mills said.

“There should have been 25 and there were only 11.”

Seven people – four clerks and three police officials, most of them from the police Criminal Record Centre division – were in the lift when it fell to the ground last month.

Mills said three of them were still in hospital.
