More policing for northern areas taxis following talks

The disgruntled taxi operators who shut down several northern area routes this week have resolved their issues with the police.

Algoa Taxi Association spokesman Craig Burgess confirmed that an agreement had been reached.

An urgent meeting between the police, the Community Policing Forum, the municipal traffic department and taxi associations took place yesterday to discuss issues plaguing the industry.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu said four taxi associations that operate in and around the northern areas had met to discuss the continuous robbery of commuters, drivers and conductors by alleged gangsters.

“Those present pledged their support and involvement in eradicating any criminal activities taking place inside the taxis or en route,” she said.

“It was agreed that the police will increase their patrols on taxi routes from the CBD to Cleary Park, Bethelsdorp, Kleinskool and Missionvale.”

Naidu said there would be frequent stop-and-search operations on taxis to ensure that passengers were not armed.

“The police also appeal to commuters to report criminal behaviour so that the matter can be thoroughly investigated,” she said.

Municipal traffic officials had undertaken to carry out law enforcement on taxi routes and at the ranks.

“The taxi associations have committed to introduce marshals to address the illegal operation of taxis.”

The taxi associations, she said, had apologised to commuters for blockading the roads.
