Small ‘Idols’ turnout, but quality on show

THE smaller than usual turnout for M-Net reality show Idols yesterday has been described by judges as a case of quality over quantity.

Although long queues have become synonymous with the show, this was not the case in Port Elizabeth. But the judges are confident of Port Elizabeth’s chances.

“The talent has been phenomenal, this could definitely be Port Elizabeth’s year,” Nel, who helped narrow down the 87 contestants to a pool of 29, said. The second round will take place today. Only three of the 29 contestants will go to Johannesburg.

In 2013 Edward Allen, 28, was one of the lucky ones, making it to the top 32.

He was back again yesterday, saying he had learnt a lot about himself in the two years and was ready to give it another shot.

“I’ve embraced myself and gained confidence,” he said.

Uitenhage-based performer Alithia Mandy Bester, 27, has made it to the second round for the third time, but remains hopeful. “I know in my heart that this will happen for me,” she said.
