Soccer in sorry state

A LACK of structures, very few training programmes and no real teams for locals to support.

These are only some of the problems that should have been improved on as part of the 2010 Fifa World Cup legacy projects. However, four years on, the situation has deteriorated even further.

And now with the next World Cup kicking off today, regional president for Safa in Nelson Mandela Bay Monde Mhletywa said he had expected much more to have happened to develop soccer in the Bay.

"We cannot expect to have a top- flight team in Nelson Mandela Bay until we sort out the basics. We need a proper academy and training programme so that we can promote local players to play at the highest level." - Riaan Marais
