Collegiate excel in founders' matches

COLLEGIATE celebrated their 140th anniversary with a series of good performances against Hudson Park over their annual founders' weekend.

In hot weather on Saturday, Collegiate clearly had the edge on the hockey field, winning all but one of their nine matches, while Hudson Park provided tougher opposition on the netball courts.

The wind started gusting before the first team netball match, making goal-scoring difficult. Collegiate had a rocky first quarter but then found their rhythm and kept to their game plan of playing short and on to the edge.

Goalkeeper Mieke Hoffman, playing for the first time in more than two months due to illness, proved to be a valuable team member. Charne Keen, despite a possible fractured finger, showed true grit and played till the end, while goal-shooter Luthokazi Veleko made the goals count. Collegiate won 23-12.

HOCKEY

THE hockey teams produced some of their best performances of the season, with the first 11 match outstanding.

After a goalless first half, Collegiate opened the scoring with a goal from captain Leigh Paulsen, followed by a second strike from Orpa de Klerk.

Hudson Park hit back swiftly through Jamie Marais and, with only three minutes left, the tension was high. The visitors fought hard until the end but Collegiate held firm for a fine 2-1 victory.
