Strike-hit Continental Tyres to lay off entire shift

ONE of Nelson Mandela Bay's biggest employers is cutting about 120 jobs after a month-long strike.

The blow to the Bay's alreadystrained employment figures comes just six months after Continental Tyre SA (CTSA) workers were put on short time during the seven-week Numsa strike which affected the automotive industry countrywide.

Although CTSA workers returned to work at the weekend after the company and metalworkers' union Numsa reached an agreement, job losses are now imminent at the New Brighton West tyre manufacturer due to the implementation of a new shift system. - Cindy Preller
