Cops mum on rhino poaching at Pumba

POLICE remained tight-lipped yesterday about their investigation following the poaching of six rhinos at Pumba Private Game Reserve earlier this year.

The rhinos were killed in two separate attacks on the reserve near Grahamstown.

Last month, a breeding bull, a cow and a two-year-old bull calf were killed. The two adult rhinos were dehorned.

This followed the poaching of three rhinos in March.

In both incidents the carcasses were found about 400m from the fence that borders the Alicedale road.

Police spokeswoman Brigadier Marinda Mills said the investigation was still under way by the Hawks and confirmed no arrests had been made.

She declined to comment further, except to say that the investigation had reached a sensitive stage. – Gareth Wilson
