Makeover for school
EIGHTEEN years after Vukanibantu Primary School was established it received a new coat of paint for the first time this year.
Thanks to the assistance of a number of businesses, the school got the "face lift” it so desperately needed.
"I wrote a letter to Plascon in Korsten where I was dealing with Michael Luvava and they gave us 50 20-litre buckets of paint.
"Cash Build from Daku gave us a set of six brushes and rollers, while Broadway from NU5 gave us a set of five rollers and trays,” said the school principal, Amanda Ntsumpa.
They started painting on June 25.
"We painted five days a week from 9am to about 5.30pm. I told the volunteers not to come on weekends so that they could attend to their own homes.
" Parents of children at the school and the school governing body (SGB) painted the school voluntarily ,” she said.
Ntsumpa, who has been the principal at the school for just under two years, said the condition of the classrooms was demoralising and not conducive to learning and teaching.
"We are painting the entire school. You can just imagine what it looked like as it has never been painted since its establishment in 1994.
"The classrooms were drab and depressing to be in. Everyone involved at the school is very happy about this.”
She concluded by thanking the businesses that helped them and added that "the department of education does not give schools enough money”.
