South Africans united in refusal to keep quiet

After one of those braai chats last weekend, in which people bat for one country or the other, half having had enough of living in South Africa, and the other firmly derisive of alternative pastures, I wondered why we’ve ended up as such a hotch-potch nation of opinionistas, so often at loggerheads with each other on the street and, nowadays, online.

They still talk about us as ‘the rainbow nation’, though in less reverential tones these days...
