Final weekend for voter registration ahead of poll

In a final push to get voters to register for the 2019 general elections, more than 300 voting stations will be open around Nelson Mandela Bay at the weekend.
Residents wanting to vote in the elections can visit their respective stations to either check their registration status or to register if they did not vote in the last election.
Political parties such as the ANC, EFF and DA are expected to be out in full force on a campaign drive to get prospective voters to register.
In a statement, Eastern Cape electoral officer Kayakazi Magudumana said the date of the election would be announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Magudumana said more than three million people were expected to visit the stations around the province on Saturday and Sunday.
“Emphasis is being put particularly on urging the youth to make use of this opportunity for them to go and register in order to participate in the upcoming election.”
ANC regional task team coordinator Babalwa Lobishe said the party expected two members of the national executive committee in the metro to help encourage people to ensure they were registered.
“We will be targeting wards 35 and 37 because they have by-elections coming up and also Motherwell,” Lobishe said.
“All our volunteers have been going door-to-door this whole week encouraging people to go out and register to vote.”
EFF regional chair Ngawethu Madaka said his party would be out at as many voting stations as it could.
“Members of our provincial executive committee will be in the metro helping us out and of course we’ll visit as many stations as we can.”
The DA will deploy former Bay mayor and councillor Athol Trollip.
DA provincial spokesperson Norman Silke said that on Saturday, Trollip would be in Uitenhage, Despatch and KwaNobuhle and on Sunday he would visit wards 35 and 37.

● A South African citizen;
● In possession of a green barcoded ID or a smart card or a valid temporary identification certificate;
