Cancer walk a family affair

After losing several friends and family members to cancer, a father-anddaughter duo will be taking part in the 2018 Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer – with the daughter pushing her dad in a wheelchair.
Paul Waller, 78, of Cotswold, who beat prostate cancer but suffers from knee problems, will be pushed by his youngest daughter, Lyn Waller, 47, on Saturday – sporting pink regalia and shaking pom-poms and with the wheelchair pimped out with pink tinsel.
Lyn will don a pink cape with the names of their loved ones printed on it.
Paul, who was diagnosed with cancer about 15 years ago, said he felt lucky he was still able to take part in a worthy cause to raise funds for others who are fighting the disease.
“I went for a routine checkup and the doctor discovered I had prostate cancer [and] without much discussion I was taken for radiation – which, looking back now, did a lot more harm than good to my body.
“Now I am on a different treatment and it is working.
“I am in recovery.”
Paul said his sister had been diagnosed with breast cancer and had a double mastectomy and she, too, was inspiration for the duo to take part in their fourth Big Walk.
“In previous years I used my walker, but I was advised by a doctor to take part in a wheelchair this year.”
Lyn said: “This is a good cause and we know the funds will be going towards research for patients.”
Saturday will be the two-year anniversary of the death of Paul’s granddaughter, Caitlin Davis, in Ireland at the age of 17, after developing type 1 sugar diabetes, and the duo will also be honouring her memory.
