Violence flares in citrus protests

The ongoing wage-related protests by Kirkwood citrus industry workers flared up again last night, with protesters blocking the road leading to the town’s Moses Mabhida township.
Police spokesman Sergeant Majola Nkohli said protesters had been burning tyres and blocking the road since about 6pm.
“We have a high police presence on the scene and they are monitoring the situation,” Nkohli said.“At least two orchard stores and a tractor have been set alight.
“There have been no arrests and no reported injuries at this stage.”
