Man arrested for drunk driving following fatal crash

A man has been arrested for drunk driving following a fatal accident in Walmer on Friday night.

Ross Ventress, 45, was released on R1000 bail and must appear in court again on June 18.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the accident occurred on the corner of 6th Avenue and Heugh Road at about 10.45pm.

Ventress, driving a Land Rover Discovery 4, collided with a motorbike.

“According to police information, the driver of the Landrover was turning right into 6th Avenue from Heugh Road while the rider and his passenger on the motorbike were travelling from 7th Avenue towards 6th Avenue,” she said.

“The passenger on the motorbike, age unknown, passed away in hospital while the rider [18] is still in hospital, condition unknown.”

Ventress was arrested on charges of culpable homicide, drunk driving and reckless/negligent driving.
