The DA claims that Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Lechesa Tsenoli has turned down their request to ask Minister of State Security, David Mahlobo about his claims regarding Advocate Thuli Madonsela and other political figures.

According to  of the DA, "In a letter, dated 12 March 2015, Deputy Speaker Tsenoli informed me that my request to put through an urgent question, in terms of National Assembly Rule 112, on Wednesday 18 March 2015, had been turned down on the grounds that there were other means to deal with the matter in the near future."

Maynier claims that this effectively "firewalls" the minister from having to respond to questions about the "bizarre espionage investigation being conducted by the SSA".

The investigation stems from a blog, Africainteligenceleaks.com, which claimed that Thuli Madonsela, former DA parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko, EFF leader Julius Malema and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union leader Joseph Mathunjwa may be spying on behalf of the US's Central Intelligence Agency.

, spokesman for the State Security Agency, said that they were investigating the claims.

"The State Security Agency looked at the matter with great concern, as these allegations will impact negatively on our hard-won democracy and will undermine the independence and credibility of our democratic institutions," he said.

The four accused meanwhile dismissed the allegations as being  , particularly considering that the blog misspells the word "intelligence".

"A grade nine pupil could see it is rubbish," said Madonsela.

"I have never heard such madness in my life... Those people are clowns. Our biggest problem is that our 'intelligence' is not intelligent," Malema said.

Mathunjwa said the investigation was "rubbish" and a "waste of state resources".

Mazibuko meanwhile responded to the allegations on Twitter.
