Madibaz Athletics Club hosts the first Eastern Province trackand-field league meeting of the year at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Stadium in Port Elizabeth tomorrow, with a huge incentive for athletes to excel.

The meeting, from 9am, serves as the trials for the national student championships and varsity athletics teams. The event will also determine whether the athletes qualify for the Eastern Province teams for the senior and junior SA Athletics Championships.

Event organiser and Madibaz athletics manager Nellis Bothma said the meeting was an opportunity to unearth new talent and to see the first years in action.

Last year’s EP track-and-field league meeting was a huge success, with more than 250 athletes participating, he said.

Hoping this year’s event would be as well attended, Bothma said: “I hope to identify new talent for the Madibaz athletics team.

“There is strong competition in the sprint, distance and throwing events. I expect a high standard.”
