Disgruntled SACP members in Nelson Mandela Bay sympathising with the now disbanded regional leadership disrupted a Joe Slovo memorial lecture yesterday, saying they did not recognise the interim leadership structure.
This was the second memorial lecture in honour of the SACP stalwart to end in chaos after ANC and SACP members in Mpumalanga traded blows and fired gunshots last week.
While yesterday’s disrupted lecture at KwaMagxaki Community Hall did not result in bloodshed, the angry protesters vowed to continue “pressing panic buttons” until provincial bosses addressed their grievances.
SACP provincial secretary Xolile Nqatha said later the protesters were not genuine SACP members.
Uitenhage sub-district secretary Xolisile Peter said they had disrupted the lecture because they were angry about not being consulted before their provincial bosses disbanded the regional executive last year.
