Windies hit back to snatch unlikely win

Tail wags as gutsy Russell secures victory.

David Miller registered his maiden one-day international century but Andre Russell stole his thunder in the most emphatic fashion as the West Indies snatched a thrilling onewicket victory over the Proteas at St George’s Park yesterday.

Outplayed in the first three games of this five-match series, the West Indies finally got off the mark thanks to a street-fighting, swash-buckling 64 off only 40 balls from number eight Russell.

Chasing 263 for victory, a West Indies victory looked a bridge too far at 73/5 after 21 overs.

But a circumspect 68 from Marlon Samuels and a hard-hit 51 by Darren Sammy set the stage for Russell, with the help of the tail, to steal the match from South Africa with nine balls to spare.

He scored the winning runs with a towering six over long-on off Kyle Abbott.
