Staff invade Midlands Uitenhage college campus

DISGRUNTLED staff of Eastcape Midlands College have invaded their Uitenhage campus, vowing not to leave until they are addressed on issues of alleged maladministration, fraud and corruption.

Armed with mattresses and blankets, staff members affiliated to the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) staged a sit-in at the college's main campus, spending Monday night and all of yesterday in the building.

This was part of their protest against the college, which is being investigated by the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Staff are calling for the suspension of those implicated in the preliminary report released last month.

They have vowed to continue their sit- in today until they get word on when their demands will be met. Also on their list of demands is the reinstatement of four Nehawu shop stewards who were suspended five months ago.

The college's Nehawu branch secretary, Kenneth Fitoyi, said they wanted those named in the preliminary report to be suspended. - Zandile Mbabela
