Despatch pit toilet strife continues as municipality offers residents buckets

AFTER promising to do so for three weeks, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has still not serviced several public pit toilets in townships near Despatch – and instead has told residents to dig holes and offered to deliver buckets.

The South African Human Rights Commission has called for answers from the municipality over the toilets, built for the residents of Kriekie Valley, Mooi Valley and Manshashe Village in 2011.

The pit toilets have not been emptied since then.

Commission senior legal officer Thabang Kheswa said yesterday the municipality had still not filed answers on the matter, which were due in March. - Estelle Ellis
