Seizure of vehicles big worry for residents

THE sheriff of the Humansdorp court attached 20 of the Kouga Municipality's vehicles last week as a result of a long-running dispute involving payment of a contractor.

Now, residents are concerned that the judgment highlights the financial crisis in which the municipality, recently rated as the least financially sustainable municipality in the Eastern Cape by Ratings Africa, finds itself. They also say the seizure of the vehicles will impact on already-questionable service delivery.

"We already battle to receive basic service delivery," resident Leon Labuschagne said. "Our question is, why is Kouga in the financial mess it is in? Who will take the responsibility for it?" he asked.

Municipal spokeswoman LauraLeigh Randall denied there was any financial crisis. - Alvené du Plessis
