Rebel ANC councillors under fire

FOUR Nelson Mandela Bay ANC councillors were hauled before their Eastern Cape bosses yesterday and read the riot act for constantly defying party caucus decisions.

They were given an ultimatum: shape up or ship out.

The councillors – Mike Tofile, Thembekile Jacobs, Lawrence Troon and Zukile Jodwana – were summoned to the ANC's provincial headquarters, Calata House in King William's Town, and warned to pull up their socks – or face the wrath of their leaders.

The meeting was attended by ANC provincial executive committee members, Bay municipal leaders and the Bay ANC regional executive committee.

The four – part of the group that was aligned to former mayor Zanoxolo Wayile, who was recalled in March last year – were taken to task for consistently going against ANC caucus decisions and not supporting council agenda items pushed by the party, such as the metro police and ward committees.

They have also been vocal in their opposition to some of the Bay leadership's decisions, much to the frustration of their bosses who need all their councillors' support to pass council items. - Rochelle de Kock
