Taxi industry reeling after assassinations

THE assassination of top taxi bosses in Nelson Mandela Bay over a seven-year period has left the industry reeling with taxi operators demanding to know why police have failed to make a breakthrough in solving the murders.

Port Elizabeth and District Taxi Association (Pedta) said the organisation has been targeted since 2008 with eight top officials being gunned down while seven attempted murders have been reported in the metro.

The industry is deeply concerned that over this period the gunmen behind the attacks have never been brought to book.

Although there are a number of taxi associations in the metro, Pedta said the assassins appeared to eliminate top officials from its organisation and the victims – either killed or wounded – include chairpersons, a former general secretary and members of the executive. - Hendrick Mphande
