Substation explosion victim 'helpful, humble'
By TMG Editor - 21 May 2014
THE Port Elizabeth man who was incinerated after an alleged attempted cable theft in Malabar on Monday was described yesterday as a helpful, humble person.
The man who was killed at the Miltonia power substation was identified as John "Hempies" Rooi, 30, of Malabar Extension Six. Rooi's devastated girlfriend, Anneline Barendse, 23, said he left the house at 6am on Monday morning and never returned.
Barendse said her boyfriend's last words were that only death would tear them apart. "No one deserves to die like that," she said. - Alvené du Plessis
