Shocked students left in limbo by funding crisis

THE National Student Financial Aid Scheme's lack of funds debacle has led to a number of top pupils from Nelson Mandela Bay's township schools having to fend for themselves financially.
The shock came after their results got them into university – but could not secure them government funding, despite earlier assurances that their marks would be sufficient to get funding.
The students were accepted at NMMU, but have been forced either to go to other universities where they secured funding or have raised the registration fees with the hope that the NSFAS will reimburse them.
The 38 students are among 51 selected by a New Brighton non-profit group, the Masinyusane Development Organisation.
