Periwinkle Charity reaches another high

OVER R220 000 was raised for the second consecutive year at the Periwinkle Charity Golf Day which took place at the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club recently.
A total of R143 550 was made through the auction alone with Kenton local Rodney Austin as the auctioneer. Items that were up for auction included a 3-litre bottle of wine, a chess set sculpted by a South African designer and a rhino walking safari, among others. The highest bid was R30 000 for seven nights for two anglers at Rancho Leonero in Mexico.
During the year, Periwinkle distributes funds to various organisations. This year they made donations to Child Welfare, the Young Chiefs Football Club and both the Nolutando and Gladys Hani Helping Hands soup kitchens which each feed 60 mouths a day.
They also gave money to Rotary Kenton-on-Sea which allowed them to take the Grade 6 pupils from Ikamvalesizwe School in Ekuphumleni to Fairewood Hobbiton camp near Grahamstown. Some of the money was used to buy Pick n Pay vouchers which were given to the Bam Orphanage in Alexandria.
Some of the funds from last year's golf day went to the Kenton Sports Trust and were used to resurface the Kenton Combined School cricket field. Alexandria Primary School received jungle gyms, and fencing and equipment was painted at crèches in the area.
The money that went to the Sunshine Coast Charity was sent to the soup kitchen in Paterson. A heart defibrillator was purchased for the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club, as well as rape kits and a Zozo hut for the trauma unit at the police station.
Other beneficiaries from recent years include schools and libraries in the area, Thokomala Foster Home, the South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre (SAMREC), Ndlambe municipality and Kenton/Bushman's Conservation.
Sue Dovey, who is part of the Periwinkle team, thanked everyone involved for their contributions.
"This is an ongoing annual commitment. Without you this wouldn't happened,” she said.
The Periwinkle Charity was founded in 2004 by like-minded holidaymakers who visit the Sunshine Coast on a regular basis. All funds are manager by Neave Stotter and Associates in Port Alfred.
The results for the golf day are as follows: winning scoreboard – Richard Wainwright, Steve Walls, Mark Currie and Michael Meeser with 91 points, ladies' longest drive on the 18th – Janine Jones, men's longest drive on the 18th – Brandon Leigh, closest to the pin of the 8th – Mike Dixon, closest to the drive on the 13th – Steve Tredoux, best individual Stableford – Mark Currie with 43 points, best dressed – Michael Meeser.
