Municipality helps SPCA

BOARD members of the Humansdorp SPCA are over the moon that the Kouga Municipality has written off a R14000 bill which accumulated over a period of time for water, lights and rates.
"We have been unable to meet all our financial obligations after we lost the municipal grant,” said board member Jessie Naude, adding that they are fully reliant on donations and the goodwill of the public.
She said she went to see the official in charge at the municipality because as soon as the huge amount was written off they were again in arrears, owing R2000.
"We just can't afford to pay these huge bills,” said Naude.
Naude said the municipality agreed to write off an amount every three months.
Spokesman for the municipality Mfundo Sobelo said: "The SPCA, like all charity organisations, has a portion of their municipal debt subsidised by government as part of the equitable share, so it is from this that part of their debt would be paid and not written off. The organisation is still expected to meet its obligation of paying the municipality for services.”
