Former Nelson Mandela Bay councillor Elizabeth Trent has died.
Trent, who was 73, died at home on Thursday after losing her battle with cancer.
She served as councillor from 1995 to 2011 and led the DA caucus in the city for a number of years.
DA Eastern Cape deputy provincial leader Bobby Stevenson said Trent had grown up in a political family.
Her grandfather was a member of parliament, along with her father, who was also a former mayor of Port Elizabeth.
Trent had been a passionate councillor with a tough approach who had worked hard in all communities in Nelson Mandela Bay, and at times did not mince her words, he said.
“During her work as a councillor she was fearless in her approach in taking on issues and was well respected by all of her opponents.
“She was an extremely passionate councillor who attended every single council meeting in her time and was thoroughly conversant with the issues of the metro.”
The party extended its condolences to her family.
“Her passing is a sad loss to the city and to the DA.”
Trent is survived by her husband, Eddie Trent, as well as her three children Victoria, Stewart and Edward.
Her funeral is on Saturday January 12 at 11am at the St Johns Methodist Church in Havelock Street, Central.
