Daniels drives new motion to unseat mayor

Patriotic Alliance (PA) councillor Marlon Daniels will attempt to unseat Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Mongameli Bobani on Thursday.
Daniels, with the help of ACDP councillor Lance Grootboom, has submitted an urgent motion of no confidence in Bobani.
The motion will be debated at the next council meeting on Thursday.
It will be the second attempt to remove Bobani after the DA’s motion of no confidence in the incumbent mayor fell flat in 2018.
Also, the subsequent motion by the ACDP and COPE to remove Bobani failed as it did not garner the numbers needed to succeed.
For the PA’s motion to succeed, it needs the backing of the majority of councillors.
The council has 120 seats, but there is one vacancy.
Daniels claims in the motion that Bobani cannot be trusted and has done nothing to help the poor in the metro.
“[Bobani] has done very little to nothing to better the lives of poor communities.
“Instead, Bobani must take responsibility for the sudden spike of hit murders and exorbitant spending of taxpayer monies not pertaining to service delivery,” he writes.
Daniels claims further that Bobani has disregarded minority parties in the coalition and has relegated his mayoral duties to ANC councillor Andile Lungisa – who has on a number of occasions referred to himself as the mayor of the city.
“He is only taking instructions from a single individual within his mayoral committee,” Daniels writes.
Daniels was instrumental in removing Bobani from the position of deputy mayor in 2017.
But when the ACDP put forward a motion to remove Bobani on December 4, Daniels voted against that motion.
Asked why he had not supported the move, Daniels said he had wanted to give Bobani a chance.
However, the “probation” period had come to an end.
When Bobani was asked for a response to the planned attempt to unseat him, he chuckled and said the pair must firstly follow the rules.
“Grootboom tried to put forward a motion but it was thrown out by the council,” Bobani said.
“I can’t really comment on this – it will be debated by council and we will see how far they will get.”
He said they were not perturbed by the attempt to remove him.
“It is not surprising that Marlon has brought this motion, he is still not happy that himself and the DA are not in power,” Bobani said.
“They were removed and he betrayed the black caucus several times when we were trying to bring stability to this city.
“We are not perturbed by this incompetent motion. We are busy delivering services.”
