JUST IN | Nhlanhla Nene resigns as finance minister, Tito Mboweni to replace him

Finance minister Nhlanhla Nene has resigned.
President Ramaphosa announced on Tuesday afternoon that Nene had asked to be relieved of his position following “quite a lot of discussion among South Africans on matters that arose in the course of his testimony of minister Nhlanhla Nene at the commission of enquiry into state capture”.
“He has indicated that there is risk that the developments around his testimony that he gave to the commission on state capture will detract from the important task of serving the people of South Africa particularly as we work to reestablish public trust in government,” Ramaphosa said.
“After due consideration of the the circumstances surrounding this matter and in the interests of good governance, I have decided to accept his resignation.”

Nene had been expected to deliver the mid-term budget policy statement in parliament on October 24.
This will be crucial in detailing Ramaphosa’s stimulus plan for the economy, as well as the government’s bailout plans for a number of struggling state-owned enterprises.
It also emerged on Tuesday morning that public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane had agreed to investigate Nene for a possible breach of the Executive Ethics Act.
The alleged breach relates to allegations surrounding a Public Investment Corporation investment in S&S Refinarias‚ reportedly including a $1.7-million "referral fee"‚ which may have benefited the minister’s son‚ Siyabonga Nene...
