Child, 4, killed by alleged drunk driver

A four-year-old child died after being hit by man allegedly driving while drunk on the outskirts of Jeffreys Bay on Thursday night.
The 88-year-old driver from Aston Bay, who was arrested for drunk driving on the scene, is expected to appear in court on Friday where he will be formally charged.
Godfrey Junior Geswint, 4, was killed after he allegedly ran across Dolphin Drive – the main road which joins Jeffreys Bay and Aston Bay - while playing with a friend on the side of the road.
Police spokeswoman Captain Gerda Swart said the man was driving his green BMW from Aston Bay towards Jeffreys Bay at about 7pm when the incident happened.
“It is further alleged by the driver that he noticed two young children standing on the side of the road, when one of the children suddenly ran across the road, and was hit by the BMW,” she said.
“The child passed on at the scene.”
Swart said the driver was taken to hospital for blood to be drawn to ascertain his blood alcohol levels.
“He was subsequently arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of liquor as well as culpable homicide,” she said.
Asked where Geswint’s guardian was at the time, Swart said that would form part of the investigation.
The driver is due to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
