Dagga worth almost R200k found in car

ALMOST R200 000 worth of dagga was found abandoned in a car in the Nemato informal settlement on the outskirts of Port Alfred this morning.

According to police, the bust came following an early morning car chase which saw the driver of a Chevrolet Optra abandon the car and flee on foot.

Police spokesman Captain Mali Govender said the eight bags of dagga, which were wrapped in black plastic bags, had been found inside the car.

“Constable Paulos Mtshatsheni was patrolling the township shortly after midnight when he came across a vehicle standing in the middle of the road,” she said.

“As he got closer to the car it sped off in the direction of Endlovini informal settlement towards Bathurst. Attempts to stop the vehicle failed, prompting the officer to give chase.”

As the chase ensued, the driver stopped the car in a side street and fled on foot. “Police then traced the vehicle to a Port Elizabeth car rental company. It had not been reported stolen,” Govender added.

Police have not yet located the driver.
