Kowie kitchen staff save runaway cruise barge

A PORT Alfred river cruise barge which broke loose from its mooring and was on its way out to sea was saved by three daring kitchen staff of a Kowie riverside restaurant who plunged into the river and paved the way for an NSRI rescue on Sunday.

Three brave Ocean Basket employees – chef Bongani Nkohle, dish washer Bulelani "Bullet" Donile and griller Khayalethu Baku – leapt into the icy river fully dressed to save the vessel.

The men had been attending a staff meeting at the restaurant ahead of a busy Father's Day trade when they saw the Sarah-Jane floating down the river. - Barbara Hollands
