Huge police raid in Sidwell nets drugs

A MASSIVE police raid on known drug dens in Nelson Mandela Bay last night netted dagga, mandrax and cocaine rocks, as well as a number of suspected illegal immigrants.

The raid, which involved scores of police officers from units such as crime intelligence, the dog unit, the tactical response team and the organised crime unit, among others, was centred on the massive Impala, Tuna and Kudu blocks situated near Commercial Road in Sidwell.

Accompanying the police were municipal officials, fire inspectors and a Department of Home Affairs official involved in phase two of the operation to check for illegal immigrants or undocumented people, illegal electrical connections and fire hazards.

A large number of the hundreds of residents who live in cramped, unhygienic conditions there applauded the police action. No arrests were made. – Shaun Gillham
