Battle of Britain memorial held in PE

TWO men, both in their 90s, who were in active service during World War 2, tipped their hats yesterday as those who fought and lost their lives in the war were remembered.

Frank Hardy, 91, who joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) in June 1940, and Colin Trader, 90, who was part of the South African Air Force (SAAF) at the time, are two of just a handful of survivors worldwide.

The SAAF Association annual memorial of the Battle of Britain, and the 70th anniversary of the Dam Busters, was held at St Paul's Anglican Church in Parsons Hill, Port Elizabeth, yesterday.

The service was preceded by a spectacular fly-past by Stu Davidson and his son, Patrick.

The Battle of Britain, in which England defended an aerial assault by Germany in 1940, was the first major campaign to be fought by air forces.
