Doek on Fleek duo in PE

The Doek on Fleek Lifestyle market is bringing African prints to Port Elizabeth this Saturday at the Boardwalk. The day-long market includes a motivational talk by Neliswa Skade, a make-up tutorial by BayTV make-up artist Amanda Nyoka, a doek tutorial and stalls selling doeks, bags, jewellery, clothing and other items.

Johannesburg businesswomen Lusiwe Mlambo, 38, and Thandi Mavata, 34, originally from Kwazakhele, started Doek On Fleek this year. Mlambo said it originally was a Mother’s Day concept called “Doek it Like Your Mother Taught You” and it grew from there.

Since May the duo have gained more than 26 000 followers on their social media platforms. Mlambo said the aim was to “support and redirect intense traffic towards the #buyblack campaign”, which would be reflected by the stall holders at Saturday’s event. “We want women to start having conversations around women issues, we are the change we seek and of course a doek tutorial is always needed to complete a Doek On Fleek event,” Mlambo said. Doek On Fleek will be in the Lighthouse Room at the Boardwalk ICC. Tickets are available at Computicket for R100 per person and the event starts at 10am.
