Bay girl's film a huge hit

A PORT Elizabeth pupil's script-writing prowess will see a short film she wrote screened at two international film festivals overseas, while negotiations are under way to have it aired on e.tv.

Alexander Road High School matric pupil Shaanay Scott, 18, won the best film award at the Nab' Ubomi Interschool Short Film Competition and Festival last year.

After winning the competition, her script was turned into a short film which she produced with the help of peers.

Shaanay and her crew – Sibongile Opoku-Addai, Aiden Jubber, Ashrick Adams, Anelisa Mcetwya and Juliet Rademeyer – spent a day doing the camera work to create Pass or Fail.

Shaanay described the film-making process as fun, but difficult.

"The end product was different to what I had imagined. I was shocked when I won the award."

With her love for technology, she hopes to pursue a career in software development at either Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University or Rhodes University in Grahamstown.

The film, which can be viewed along with the other winning scripts on YouTube, tells the story of a pupil who gets distracted by the wrong crowd. - Chanice Koopman
