Slow fest to paint Sedge orange
THE countdown to Sedgefield's annual Slow Festival has already begun with the launch of several quirky orange-themed competitions which seek to roll out the orange carpet, draping the town – and its townspeople – in the official festival colour well in advance of its kick-off on Easter weekend April 18 to 20.
From "selfies" including kids, family, friends or even pets dressed in orange making their appearance online, to locals donning zany orange hat designs and orange-themed outfits parading around town on "Orange Thursdays" every week until Easter, the residents of Sedgefield intend to make the launch of their Slow Festival a visual affair of note.
Knysna Tourism marketing manager Johan van Schalkwyk said it's all part of the Sedgefield community pride and camaraderie. "Sedge – as we locals call it – is a close-knit town and everyone looks forward to Slow Festival, especially seeing what crazy creations our neighbours can come up with for the anything that floats competition and parade."
Slow Festival organiser Amanda Dixon, who leads a team of 16 local volunteers who give of their time to make it all happen, said the 2014 festival will offer a mix of popular favourites as well as a few new events. "As always the programme includes adventure, beach fun, festival fun, slow food and the Sunday morning sunrise Easter service. We have 29 events over three days – including popular favourites like the nightly drive-in movies, the nightly PiliPili beerpong competition, as well as the Adcock Ingram anything that floats event and a new Braai Master challenge on April 19, as well as the Bunny Beach fling, sand sculpting challenge and Easter Sunday street parade on April 20."
Amanda added, "There are also new events like the Slow Players' welcome tennis day on April 19 followed by dinner and dancing the night away at the Windpomp Diner 'Keeping it Country' social get-together. For the first time, we will also have a Living Craft and Art exhibit on April 20 , where some of our most talented local craftsmen and women will demonstrate how they create their work".
