Drift master spins his web

Not even a rain-swept track was enough to stop drift sensation Jason Webb as he took the chequered flag in round four of the Dragon Energy SupaDrift Series at Port Elizabeth’s Aldo Scribante race track on Saturday.
The event, presented by Sun International Boardwalk, saw two-time national series champion, Webb, navigate a wet Aldo Scribante track as he eased to victory in the final battle with Gavin Puren.
The venue had been sunkissed for most of the morning and early afternoon, which ensured some high-octane action, as drifters made it through qualifying without too much incident.
However, with the top-eight shootout looming, the heavens opened, forcing drifters to alter their approach to get the best out of their cars.
Each driver still in the competition when the rain came was allowed a sighting lap, which helped them get to grips with conditions.
Webb, in his supercharged Monster Energy Ford Mustang, is now only two wins away from his third national title as he put on a drifting exhibition for excited onlookers.
“I won’t say everything went to plan, as we qualified in fourth spot, and we would have liked to end number one, but other than that, I think we executed the rest of our plans quite well,” he said.
Webb said the weather played to his advantage as he enjoyed driving in the wet.
Webb, keeping the third series title in sight, said they would still approach the last two rounds with the aim of winning each event.
“It’s a pretty good feeling to know that the title is now almost in sight, but the mindset won’t change, we go to these races to win, and that will never change,” he said.
Puren, racing in his Puren Plant Hire Toyota Soarer, said conditions were quite challenging, likening it to an ice-rink.
“We had a bit of trouble setting up for qualifying, but that sorted out by the time we got to the first tandem runs,” he said.
In the Pro 1 Class, Trevor Puren took on newcomer Tinashe Bundo. Despite a battle which ebbed and flowed, it was Puren who snatched victory from Bundo in the wet conditions. The next stop in the series takes drifters to Dezzi Raceway, Port Shepstone on August 31 and September 1.
