Caster aims for first diamond

While the country continues to bask in the glory of Caster Semenya’s feat at the Olympic Games, the show goes on for the 800m queen as she looks to capture her first diamond at the Zurich meeting in the 2016 Diamond League series tonight.

The Diamond League series is an annual 14meeting track and field event broadcast exclusively live on SuperSport.

Winners of the series in their respective disciplines are awarded a diamond and prize money.

Semenya lines up against the women with whom she shared the podium in Rio, Burundi’s Francine Niyonsaba and Margaret Wambui of Kenya.

Tonight’s race is somewhat of a rerun of the Olympic final with Lynsey Sharp, Melissa Bishop, Joanna Jozwik, Kate Grace and Maryna Arzamasava, finalists in Rio, also part of the lineup.

The diamond is within Semenya’s grasp as she leads the 800m standings with 40 points, two ahead of second-placed Niyonsaba, having won four races in the series so far.

With double points on offer tonight, nothing but a win will secure her a diamond.

SuperSport will cross to Zurich from 7.45pm, with Semenya’s race scheduled for 9.02pm.

At 9.20pm it is the men’s 100m in which Akani Simbini will be looking to go one better from last week’s second placing in Paris.

He lines up against a field similar to that in Paris, with Asafa Powell (whom he has beaten this year), Adam Gemili and Omar McLeod the only new additions.
