Pearson shine against Vic Park

PEARSON were largely successful when they visited Victoria Park for the annual co-ed derby at the weekend, winning 21 out of 25 matches.

It was the Pearson first rugby team who stole the limelight with a 69-3 victory.

From the outset, it was evident that Pearson were going to be too strong, as their physicality and pace proved too much for the hosts.

The Pearson forwards dominated all facets of the game, providing good ball for the backs.

Pearson centres Emille du Plessis and Duwayne Baartman continually sliced through the Victoria Park defence and scored two tries each. Overall, the visitors scored 11 tries, of which seven were converted. The remaining tries came from Gorha Adonisi (2), Nathan Augustus, Robert van Onselen (2) and Tiaan Gerber (2).

HOCKEY

THE Pearson girls' hockey team continued their good run of form with a well-earned 1-0 victory.

In what turned out to be an attacking game from the Pearson girls, VP were at times caught flat in defence. The goal came from Simone Upman, who netted in the 10th minute.

VP also produced good hockey with some strong attacking play. They came close to equalising, but Pearson's strong defence kept them at bay.

Special mention must be made of Pearson defender Luzane Potgieter, who stood out with her contribution.

NETBALL

Pearson also produced an excellent victory in the netball encounter, winning 32-19.

The visitors surged to a 19-7 lead at half time, with Abigail van Rensburg outstanding on defence and captain Gcobisa Yaco producing a match-winning performance at centre.

VP fought hard in the second half and were shaded by one goal, being unable to make up the first-half deficit.

  • Pearson played DF Malherbe in the mid-week league and produced a comfortable 29-17 win.
