Grey top Pearson at home

AFTER soaking up some significant early Pearson pressure, Grey High came back to defeat Pearson 3-0 in their schools hockey encounter last week.

Grey opened the scoring when they forced a penalty corner, making it count when Kurt Wicht followed up on goalkeeper Mark Zonneveld's save and netted the rebound.

Play swept from end to end throughout the game, but Grey took another big step forward when Jason Evezard finished cleanly after a goalmouth melee.

That made it 2-0 to Grey at half time, but it was far from one-way traffic.

In the second stanza, both sides were guilty of squandering several gilt-edged chances and both goalkeepers, Zonneveld and Richard Nesbit, had excellent games.

Grey, however, sealed the deal with 15 minutes to go when Laython Coombs slotted their third with a shot from the circle-edge, which took a convenient ricochet off a Pearson stick.

Overall, the game was evenly contested but went the way of the home team who, on the night, finished a bit more clinically than the visitors.
