Usual suspects to compete for bowls honour

THE EP bowls league season begins tomorrow, with recent winners Port Elizabeth and Mill Park starting as the favourites to mount a strong challenge for the honours.

Keen competition can, however, be expected from Walmer and The Woods, especially with the latter having acquired the services of Hennie Slabbert and Dave Morton.

The pick of the fixtures for the weekend should be the clash between Mill Park and Walmer.

It will be surprising if the winners of the women's league do not come from either Walmer or The Woods.

These clubs have dominated the leagues for the last eight years and, with champions The Woods having gained provincial bowlers Barbara Coetzee and Dalena Muller, they look well equipped to retain the title.

The EP mixed pairs competition continues on Sunday after a break during which the EP teams enjoyed a successful outing against Border in Port Alfred.

EP won overall on the day and gained some useful practice for the inter-regional competitions in March.

All of the fancied teams in the mixed are on track in their respective sections, with the section winners to be decided on Sunday afternoon.

The winners move into the play- offs at The Woods on February 9.
