Couple married for 67 years passes away together holding hands

A California couple, married 67 years, died hours apart while holding hands this month, their daughter said.

Floyd Hartwig, 90, and his wife Violet, 89, died on Thursday in their home in California,  reports.

The couple had known each other since they were children and married in 1947.

They each battled illnesses in recent years, with Violet having suffered from strokes and had dementia, while Floyd had bladder and colon cancer, and had been diagnosed with kidney failure, the family said.

The couple had been given hospice care in the last weeks of their lives, and with the end near, family members pushed their beds together, daughter Donna Scharton said.

Floyd died first, holding Violet's hand. She passed away five hours later, according to Scharton.

They had three children, four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, family said.
