Bursary enabled him to help kids

A lifelong dream of becoming a teacher and sharing his passion for education with pupils has finally been realised for Gerhard Grundling.
He is one of seven reading assistants who took up the opportunity to study teaching with the assistance of the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm’s education bursary programme, put in place specifically for reading assistants.
Grundling is now a grade 6 teacher at Gamtoos Valley Primary School in Patensie.
Reading assistants are placed and paid for by Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm’s, to assist in underprivileged schools in the region. They set up reading programmes and provide institutional support for teachers.
Having developed a passion for teaching as a reading assistant, Grundling began studying towards a teaching diploma at a local university after matriculating, but had to transfer to distance learning due to financial constraints.
“After moving back home and starting my Unisa studies, I became a reading assistant, which gave me an opportunity to learn so much about teaching, in a practical way.
“Becoming a teacher was my absolute dream and I knew I’d do whatever it took to finish my qualification,” he said.
“When I heard I would receive a bursary to complete my studies, it was such a huge relief and I was beyond excited.”
He said his previous experience as a reading assistant at an impoverished school had helped him understand each pupil’s individual needs.
“I know their backgrounds and their struggles, which has helped me to adapt my approach so I can help them continue to grow and learn better.
“For some, I’m the only one who compliments or encourages them, so I make an extra effort to enrich their lives.”
