Motorist out on bail after guard’s death

A motorist who allegedly knocked down and killed a security guard cycling to work in Walmer at the weekend and then drove off has been released on bail.
Mzwinale Bulo, 37, a contract security guard at the South End KWIKSPAR in First Avenue, Walmer, was knocked off his bicycle at the Heugh Road and Eighth Avenue intersection at about 5am on Sunday.
He died later of his injuries.
By 5pm the same day, Cain Rockman, 21, handed himself over to police at the Walmer police station, with his lawyer, Peter Daubermann.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said Rockman, the alleged driver, was arrested at the police station and released on R2,000 bail with a warning to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Naidu said after the VW Polo hit Bulo, it allegedly sped off.
She said the manageress at KWIKSPAR saw Bulo lying on the side of the road.
“Our preliminary investigation reveals that he [Bulo] was en route to work at 4.45am from Walmer township when he was hit by a vehicle.
“There were no witnesses and he [Bulo] was left on the side of the road with his bicycle where he later died.
“The car sped off in the direction of Charlo,” she said.
“It has since materialised that the owner of the Polo was not the driver at the time of the crash. A friend [Rockman] was driving the car.”
Police officials close to the probe said they were believed to have been returning from a party in the beachfront area.
Naidu said the vehicle was towed to the police pound where it would be analysed.
Asked where the two lived, she said they stayed in the Lovemore Heights-Charlo area.
“The owner of the car, who was the passenger at the time of the accident, could face additional charges.”
The court extended Rockman’s bail to January 23 when he is due to appear again.
